The book that we think everybody should read when starting to learn more
about Texas Holdem poker is "Small Stakes Hold'em: Winning Big with Expert
Play" by Ed Miller, David Slansky and Mason Malmuth. This book will teach
you all the basics of the game, give you a good chart of starting hands you
should be playing and explaining which ones you should not be playing.
Also, you should not read Small Stakes Hold'em just once. Read it over and
over, until you know everything that is mentioned in there. Should you be able
to play by this book, you will already be in pretty good shape.
Once you read the book and have started playing a bit in the poker rooms,
you should think about purchasing the
Pokertracker software. It will cost you money, but you will be able to
analyze every hand you played. That way, you can see in which areas you still
have problems with your games, so you can work on fixing these problems. This
software is extremely helpful and you will make the money it will cost you to
purchase this software back in no time.
Another thing that you should do in order to improve your poker play is to
discuss interesting hands you are not sure about with friends of yours who
also play poker, or join a poker forum to discuss poker with other members and
improve your game that way.
